Harley Davidson Derby Covers
A derby cover is the round lid over the clutch, on the outside of the primary case, fitted so the clutch can be adjusted without pulling the whole primary cover off. Genuine covers here run from Willie G Skull and Screamin' Eagle to Live To Ride and Classic Chrome, for Dyna, Softail, Touring and Sportster models. Check the hole pattern before you order: it follows the engine, not just the model name.
Buy the gasket at the same time
Harley-Davidson's own fitting notes for the Live To Ride cover, 25340-99A, say plainly: "removing and installing engine covers may require purchase of new gaskets. See dealer for information." Only the cover and its mounting hardware are listed as in the box. No gasket. Check the hole pattern before you order
A derby cover has to match the bolt pattern on the primary case, and that pattern follows the engine, not the model name on the tank. Our own shelf shows the split: 94630-98's hardware kit is stamped for the older Evolution Big Twin, 25331-10's cover for the Twin Cam. Sportster fits too, named directly in 25130-04A, 25701021, 34790-05, 34760-04 and 12600261, though the filter above doesn't carry a Sportster tag. Tell us your year and model and we'll match the hole count, not guess it from a photo.
Fitting one is a straightforward job
Taking a derby cover off doesn't mean draining the primary or splitting anything else open. That's the whole point of the part: quick access to the clutch, not the whole outer primary cover. Riders who've done the job say the trick is standing the bike upright, not leaving it on the side stand. On the stand, fluid sits high enough to reach the cover's opening and runs out, even at a correct level.
